Ann was raised in rural Guilford County in McLeansville, NC. Growing up on a farm in a home dating back to 1858 gave her plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors, cultivating her love of science. She received a degree in MedicalTechnology (now known as Medical Laboratory Science) from Appalachian StateUniversity and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
As with others at the hospital, patient care and safety are her chief concerns.According to the Center for Disease Control, 14 billion lab tests are ordered annually, and 70 percent of medical decisions depend on laboratory results.
During her 38-year career at Wake Forest Baptist, she has held a variety of positions in the clinical laboratory. She currently manages two Critical CareBlood Gas Laboratories on the main campus. Ann says, “We are a behind the scenes team of nine, providing an average of more than 20,000 tests per month. The primary focus of our labs is blood gas, electrolyte and co-oximetry testing which is particularly important in critical care situations. The results we provide help our healthcare team interpret conditions that affect your respiratory system, circulatory system and metabolic processes. We support our level one traumaED, the medical, surgical, trauma and cardiovascular ICU’s, our comprehensive cancer center and more than thirty operating rooms.”
Ann is so grateful to lead an amazing team. She fosters a collaborative atmosphere where all ideas and voices are welcome. They work together striving for continuous process improvement. As she prepares for retirement, she is so proud of the accomplishments the team has made over the years in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
